Every fall, the same question comes up around Sydney: where do I put the summer car, the convertible, the project car, or the second vehicle nobody drives until May? A Cape Breton winter brings road salt, freeze-thaw cycles, snowbanks and plows, and none of it is kind to a vehicle parked in the driveway for five months. If you're planning winter car storage in Sydney, NS for 2026–27, here's what to know before the first big storm.
Why store your car for the winter?
Leaving a car outside all winter in Nova Scotia exposes it to:
Salt and slush. Salt spray from the road gets into wheel wells and underbodies and speeds up rust.
Snow and ice. Heavy snow loads, ice on the glass, and the scraping that follows are all hard on paint and seals.
Plows and snowbanks. A car that never moves tends to get buried, dinged or blocked in.
Battery and tire wear. Cold drains batteries, and tires that sit in one spot can develop flat spots.
Putting the car in a storage unit for the season keeps it out of the weather and frees up your driveway for the vehicles you actually use.
What CoastGuard offers for winter vehicle storage
CoastGuard Self Storage is at 300 Stable Dr in Sydney. All of our units are insulated drive-up units, so you pull right up to the door. The facility is fenced, with a 24/7 keypad gate and video surveillance, so you can check on your car any time, day or night.
Rentals are month-to-month. You can store the car from November until the roads are clear in spring, then move out without a long-term contract.
Which unit size fits a car?
10x20 (200 sq ft), $234.99/month. Fits a car, SUV or pickup truck. This is the usual choice for one vehicle.
10x30 (300 sq ft), $379.99/month. Our largest unit, with room for a vehicle plus tires, gear or other belongings.
5x10 (50 sq ft), $139.99/month. Too small for a car, but it fits a motorcycle, a set of winter or summer tires, or seasonal gear.
Both car-sized units are currently full, so if you want a spot, join the waitlist now on our booking page and we'll let you know when one opens up. You can compare every size, its price and what fits in each, on our Storage Unit Sizes & Prices page.
How to prepare your car for winter storage
A little prep in the fall makes spring a lot easier:
Wash it, underneath too. Get the salt and road grime off before it sits for months.
Fill the tank. A full tank leaves less room for moisture. Ask your mechanic whether a fuel stabilizer makes sense for your vehicle.
Top up the fluids. Check the oil, coolant/antifreeze, brake fluid and washer fluid. If an oil change is due, do it before storage.
Look after the battery. Disconnect it, or use a battery maintainer if you'll have one.
Set the tire pressure. Inflate to the recommended pressure to help prevent flat spots.
Clean the inside. Take out food, wrappers and anything that might attract pests.
Cover it. A breathable car cover keeps dust off.
Insurance: what you need
Every vehicle stored in a drive-up unit at CoastGuard must have proof of insurance from a vehicle insurance provider. Talk to your insurer before you store the car. Many have options for vehicles that are off the road for the season, and they can tell you what your policy needs.
For belongings stored alongside the car, CoastGuard partners with Intact Insurance. You can add contents coverage when you rent, and it's billed monthly.
How renting works
Pick your size on the booking page, or join the waitlist if it's full.
Reserve online. Add your payment details, sign your lease and manage everything in one account. You'll need a valid government-issued ID, such as a driver's licence or passport.
Move in. You'll get your unit number and gate code by email, and you can drive in any time, 24/7.
Billing is month-to-month, with rent due on the 1st of each month, so you pay for 12 months a year, not 13.
